What to pack for a trip in Iceland?

As you probably know, no matter the season, the Icelandic weather can change quickly. With some simple packing advices, you’ll be ready for anything: rain, sun, wind, snow… You can expect all in the same day but you’ll be well prepared!

The climat

“If you don’t like the weather, just wait five minutes”. We like to say this joke about the weather in Iceland, mainly because you can expect all kind of weather in one day: sun, rain, snow and wind!

The good news is that Iceland is warmer than its name and position would suggest.

There is probably a lot to say about the weather here, but to make it global and easy to understand we can say that there is not lot of temperature variation between summer and winter. During the winter time (mid October to mid April) the temperatures are around -5°C to +10°C, very often somewhere in the middle. During the summer time, it is mostly around 15 to 18°C. The wind always makes the difference: sometimes it seems to come from every direction possible!

Your activities

Your packing list will mainly depends of the kind of activities you have in mind: if your plan is to stay in the city, or if you’ll stand outside for hours in the wild nature.

The tips

The best and simple advice we can give is : LAYERS. Layers, layers and again layers.

We recommend you to have a look on the video below from Inspired by Iceland. They explain that very well, and the video is better than a thousand of words 🙂

The basics

  • Warm clothing
  • Wind and rain proof jacket
  • Warm jumper & long sleeve tee for layering
  • Wool socks
  • Good walking shoes

  • Gloves, hat, scarf
  • Sunglasses (it´s so bright here 🙂 )
  • Swimsuit
